PHASE 2B STREET PROJECT-FIBER OPTICS CABLE UPDATE
Thursday at 8:45 the fiber optic cable was hit and damaged. in early June of 2026, prior to the start of work on the street, IPS had received clearance from Dig Alert which is required a safety measure that is performed to identify any utilities that may be impacted by the construction. Receiving confirmation that utilities were marked and none of them would be impacted, work proceeded. Unknown to Dig Alert, Verizon and IPS was the fact that when the conduit containing the fiber optic cable was installed, the installing contractor went OVER the slurry covered power conduit instead of under it. This placed the fiber optic conduit at base material level thus resulting in the damage.
Dig Alert and utility was notified immediately. When Utiliquest (Verizon/Frontier specialist for Frontier) technician arrived later that day, he stated that the conduit was not serving Verizon/Frontier and did not know who owned the conduit. this resulted in a frantic search to find the owner and initiate repairs.
His conclusion that it was NOT owned by Verizon caused us to lose time as we contacted Charter Communications and Spectrum to discover the owner. Fortunately, Spectrum sent out their tech, Sam, and he clearly stated it was not theirs and he did not know of anyone else BUT Verizon that had service in this area. This led to conversing with Victor at Verizon call center and after providing a lot of information, getting it to dispatch for a technician to come out. It seems to me, the company thought it was a computer issue and had to convince them it was a damaged cable.
Finally met with Fred and John from Verizon today (Friday) at 2:00 pm for them to actually see the damage and arrange repairs to be started. They actually discovered a second conduit that just stops at the slurry covered power conduits which may have been abandoned when it could not get over or under the power cicuits.
Thanks to all the La Verne Live Oak HOA members that called into Verizon stating their internet was down as I believe that helped to get us to the next step in this process.
